I was commisioned by internationally renowned, multi-awarded artist, director and playwright Brett Bailey, to create the artwork and animations for his radical take on Verdi’s Macbeth, which premiered in Cape Town before touring Europe in 2014 and New Zealand in 2015. Described as South Africa’s most exciting and provocative theatre director, Bailey has set his version of the classic Shakespearean tragedy in Central Africa : Conflict rages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as African warlord Commander Macbeth and his ambitious wife murder the king and unleash a trail of horrific destruction among multinational treachery, ethnic warfare and brutal militia. Inspired by bold African design elements, the opera’s animated visuals are combined with exquisite stage and lighting design to create a surreal visual realm of communication. Much more important though than the striking images, is the vision and ultimately the message of the work which made it one of the most important projects I have worked on thus far. The show received five stars in London and has been described as ” Visually and musically breathtaking ” ( Sunday Independent ) and as ” A séance where high Western art meets pan-African ethos..” ( The Star ).
